Planning a first date can be intimidating. You could spend hours planning the date down to the last detail, but things don’t always go to plan. That being said, it doesn’t mean there aren’t things you can do to make sure your date goes as smoothly as possible.

Here are five tips to ensure you and your date have an enjoyable experience:

1) Get to know each other

The best way to do this is by talking to each other. Try to plan your date so that you have the opportunity to talk whilst doing something. We recommend a trip to the zoo or museum above going to a rock concert or watching a movie. There’s something sincere about the simplicity of bonding over coffee.

2) Make sure your date is comfortable

Your date may not be comfortable having dinner at your place, at least for the first few dates. This is especially true if you’ve met via an online dating service. Stay away from places that may have noisy crowds or that may unsettle your date.

3) Account for your date’s interests

Even if attending renaissance art evenings is your favourite pastime, it may not be for everyone. Try to learn about what your date likes, and plan around that. You will come across as more considerate and genuinely interested.

4) Have a graceful exit strategy

Unfortunately, first dates don’t always go well. Things could turn awkward very quickly if you realize that you’re not compatible but you’re stuck in a theater for the duration of the play.

5) Keep things simple and inexpensive

Chivalry may not be dead after all, but your date may insist on splitting the bill. Choose something that the average person would be okay with paying for.

Remember to keep things light-hearted and be yourself. This will increase your chances of having a great first date, and it may also make your next date that much easier.
